Arc Flash Hazard Analysis: NFPA 70E Compliance & IEEE 1584 Calculations
Course Description
Covers the technical requirements of NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace) and IEEE 1584 (Guide for Performing Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations). Electrical engineers will learn to collect system data, model short circuit currents and protective device clearing times, calculate incident energy (cal/cm2) at working distances, establish arc flash boundaries, and specify safety PPE.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this continuing education course, the licensee will be able to:
- Determine incident energy exposure levels and arc flash protection boundaries using IEEE 1584 equations
- Select appropriate Arc Flash Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) based on incident energy analysis
- Interpret and apply NFPA 70E tables for arc flash risk assessment and PPE categories
- Design and specify compliant arc flash warning labels for switchgear, panelboards, and motor control centers (MCC)
